On Gardener's World on the television this evening Carol Klein was talking about Cannas and the fact that as they are a bit tender they need to be protected in the winter. So, she said they should be put somewhere like a garage.
The Husband said "Anyone intelligent will have a model railway in their garage".

In our garage, a canna would not survive. I did, however, over-winter a hibiscus in a little closet that is under the steps to the basement. It's first blossom of the season opened on Wednesday.
Does The Husband have a thing for railroads, model railroads, both, neither? Tell him that he really hurt my feelings--calling me unintelligent!! *snickering* I know more people with airplanes (real ones) in their garages than who have railways (real or model) there.

Cop Car, personally I avoid any plant that needs overwintering undercover. I don't have a greenhouse nor anywhere indoors where I can put plants. I prefer plants that are winter hardy (and they have to be as tough as old boots to cope with cold winters, really hot summers, low rainfall - we get as much rain as Jerusalem - and heavy clay soil. Having said all that the garden is a picture. I wish I had a digital camera to show you.
So do I wish you had that camera. Last winter was my first attempt at "holding over". The hibiscus had been a gift from one of my engineers upon the occasion of my retirement, and I knew that she would be pleased to hear that it lasted for more than a single summer.
In the dining room, I attempted to over-winter a huge fern plant (I don't know what kind--very small leaflets) for Elegant Friend who had displayed it on her front porch during the summer. It did well until one week when I failed to spray it enough. So many of the leaves fell off (and I felt that the plant had been mortally wounded) that I pitched it and told EF that she would just have to spend the $12 to buy another this summer!

We have a through living/dining room and at Christmas the Husband insists on a huge christmas tree which leaves no room for any other plant life in the room. Nowhere suitable for planyts elsewhere in the house either.
Oh, I forgot to answer your other question Sorry. The Husband has a real passion for model railways and has loads and loads of model trains, carriages, etc. It isn't set up yet, as we have some work to do in the house first, but he plans to fill the garage with a model railway layout.
He used to be a real trainspotter when a boy and spent a lot of time on railway station platforms looking at trains. The result is that whenever he watches a tv programme set during the Golden Age of Steam (i.e. Miss Marple, Poirot, etc, etc) he constantly criticises the trains used. He isn't really interested in the drama, just the trains.
